Free Online Phonic Videos

At De Beauvoir, we learn phonics using Read Write Inc. There is a video about understanding phonics - have a look at why we teach phonics.
It is important that the children are saying pure sounds. Have a look at how to say the different phonemes (sounds) in the English language.
Watch Ruth and Rosie teach phonics lessons to help your child learn to read at home. Lessons are from Monday to Friday. Each one is ten minutes long and available for 24 hours.

Where does it come from?

Do you remember cracking eggs when we made our chocolate cup cakes?
(Here's a photo to remind you)
Today I've been wondering about where our food come from...
Can you choose four ingredients or packages from your kitchen cupboards?
Have a look at the packaging and find out what country does the food come from?
Can you make your own style of map to show where it come from and how it might have had to get to your home?
You can use this calculator to work out the food miles of your items;

Be a foodie poet!

Michael Rosen wrote poem about a chocolate cake.
Can you write a poem about food or your favourite meal?
It could be...an acrostic poem or a rap. You could write a poem about all the foods you like or dislike. Each line starts with I like... But I don't like..
Think about line length and rhythm.
Post your poems in the comments box below.

A zoo of talking animals!

The British Library needs our help!
 They're trying to create a zoo of talking animals. They have asked all children to invent their own talking animal inspired by talking creatures in story books, including the Gruffalo.
Here is Mrs Binnie's creature! What do you think?
Does your creature have special powers? Can it see into the future or read peoples minds? Does your creature live in a forest, in a jungle or in a zoo? If your creature came to your house what would you do? The Gruffalo has purple prickles, a poisonous wart and knobbly knees. What kind of body does your creature have?
Here's a video to inspire you of Axel Scheffler explaining how to draw the Gruffalo;
E-mail a photo of your creature to this e-mail address and we'll forward it on to the British Library: debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com
Happy drawing!

How are you Year 2?

 Hey, Year 2!
I've been thinking about all the fun things we've done this year.
Who remembers our fabulous nativity?
(Let me know if you do in the comments box below!)
While we are all not together I thought it might be nice for us all to keep a diary. You could write your diary entries on paper, in a special book or maybe even in the writing book you took home in your home learning packs.
Here's my diary entry from today;
Dear Diary,

What a sunny day! I woke up to sun pouring in my window and making patterns on the wall. It almost feels like summer.

 I am REALLY missing my amazing class and all their great learning. I'm especially missing their great writing. I hope they're all still doing their daily reading and staying active by doing PE at home. I wonder if they have tried Joe Wick's daily workout yet?

Bye for now diary (I'll write to you again tomorrow),
