England - the lion symbol

There are three key symbols linked to the country of England;
the lion, the rose and St. George's flag.
Today we're going to learn a little bit more about the symbol of the lion.
The lion was chosen as a symbol of England because it was thought to be the animal that best personifies the qualities of  being English such as strength, courage, dignity and pride.  In the past there were lions kept at the tower of London. The lion is used as a symbol of English sporting teams such as the cricket and rugby team.
The English lion is also found on the royal families coat of arms;
